Deeplight by Frances Hardinge, Review by Wei Li

The story starts just after all the gods have died. In this world gods are real, not creatures of myth made up to enslave people- although this theme is explored in the book. Hark is fifteen and he and his best friend are orphans who scavenge around the islands to survive. Then they find a god object that completely changes their lives.

It explores themes of friendship, Hark realizes that people aren't always as nice as they seem and themes of religion, like how gods can be worshiped as deities or feared as monsters.

It's got really cool bits of science in it too, although at the beginning of the book the author apologizes for bending the laws of physics.

The coolest thing is how Frances describes the ocean and its depths, because this world isn’t like the world we know now -the ocean is a different realm.

Rated: 5/5 God Hearts "I recommend this book very strongly –I didn’t think I would like it this much, I thought with all the awards plastered on it that it would be just another deep sea diving thing, but I could not stop reading it."

Mondays not coming, by Tiffany D. Jackson, Review by Maria

The book is about this girl Claudia and her best friend Monday, who goes missing. Usually they’re so close because they would send each other letters and cards whenever they are away from each other during the holidays. But this time Claudia hears nothing back, and when she returns to school, Monday is missing. The whole plot revolves around Claudia figuring out what has happened.

The Dark Between Stars by Atticus Poetry, Review by Bella

I got it for my birthday and it’s really, really good. My favourite poem is one about rain. It’s the kind of book you would read by the windowsill with a cup of tea.
