One Foot Wrong by Sofie Laguna, Review by Sasha

It starts off with this girl Hester. She seems to have the mental capacities of a child. Her parents are paranoid, abusive and religious. They won't let her go outside. She was a difficult birth and they didn't trust hospitals, so they punish her by tying her to a cross like Christ. Her mother is depressed and blames Hester for everything. Her only source of entertainment is a children's bible and all of her thinking is coloured and restricted by this and the other meager objects in her room. One day people in town start asking questions and her parents are forced to send her to school. She meets a girl called Mary and this turns out to be disastrous...

Rated: 5/5 Trees "The way the story is told, it seems like this really innocent world. You have to read between the lines a lot"

Dread Nation by Justine Ireland, Review by Wei Li

This story is set in America, about a decade after the Civil War. Racism is very present. While there are no longer officially any slaves, people are not free, and women are particularly repressed. It's told from the perspective of an African American girl Jane. Her mum is white, really white. She was born three days before the zombie apocalypse. Now the virus has evolved and people turn as soon as they are infected. You might have thirty minutes if you're lucky. Zombies are called Shamblers because of the way they shuffle about. After a lot of fighting, North and South America have united as The Survivalists. African American people are being forcibly taken to training camps to learn how to fight the zombies. Jane is a great student, except for etiquette. She's studying to be an attendant, which is a glorified bodyguard for pretty, white people.

Rated: 5/5 Scythes "Action packed with a little bit of romance but not too much. I really like how it deals with racism and sexism."

This boy shepherd goes around with sheep for years and years until he thinks he should find his personal legend, his power. He meets an alchemist who he befriends. His dreams lead him to his omens.

Rated: 4.5/5 Omens "If you like sci fi that's slow you will enjoy this."

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell, Review by Bella

I'm annoyed. I've only read five chapters so far. The gist of it is that Simon has no magic, but still has wings and a tail. Penny is trying to contact Agatha, but Agatha is having none of it. Remy plans a surprise trip, while Simon is considering breaking up with Baz. It cuts to Agatha and her life. She has a crush on her new best friend Ginger, but Ginger is interested in this guy.

Rated: 2.5/5 "Ehs"

First Class Murder by Robin Stevens, Review by Robin

The main characters are Daisy and Hazel. They are on a train with Hazel's Dad when someone gets murdered. I'm not sure who yet, but I'm pretty sure who yet, but I'm pretty confident it's going to be the incredibly helpless and dim-witted Miss Daunt...

Aurora, an undercover secret agent from book two is on board as well. Nobody really wants Daisy and Hazel to get involved. The last sentence I read was 'and then we heard a scream...'

Rated: 5/5 Ruby Necklaces "Great series"

The Big Dry by Tony Davis, Review by Eva

This is a really good book, but at times it annoyed me a lot, because of this character who disappears and reappears all the time. It's about two young brothers, George and Beeper. The climate has been destroyed and there is hardly any water left. They have to use a spile. Big storms come and wipe out everything. There are sandstorms called Blasers. Their dad goes into the city to get George a birthday cake but he doesn't come back. The story is how George and Beeper cope without him.

Rated: 4.5/5 Ghost Towns "Really good"

This is a collection of stories from a bunch of different authors. They are all Australian and from diverse backgrounds. They are all really unique, one is written in second person.

Rated: 5/5 "Awesome. You should read these stand-alone stories."

All the Light We Cannot See By Anthony Doerr, Review by Ciena

It's about a girl who went blind at age six and a German boy will have to work at the mines his dad died in. This is the story of them in their teens. The girl learns to know the world through miniatures. It's about how the war affects them.

Rated: 4.5/5 Sea of Flames "I recommend it"

It's about this girl Lily who is 14. Her Dad is not very nice. They live on a peach farm. It starts with her writing on her bed about the bees who live in the walls of her bedroom and come out and fly around every night. She calls her dad T Ray because she doesn't want to call him dad. She is white and the woman who looks after her house and cares for her is black. It's set in North Carolina and there's a lot of racism. Her dad blames her for her mother's death when she was a child. She wants to find out about who her mum was. When she finds a box of her things including a statue of a black Mary with a place name attached, she sets off for answers.

Rated: 5/5 Bees "It's a really beautiful story"
