March '18 Reviews

It’s really good, I cried. He’s born an old man and ages in reverse. It’s really horrible to see that when you’re first born and when you die are much the same. I really loved it. I found it really sad how his parents basically disowned him, not caring for him as an old man at all but then loving him when he became younger. I didn’t like that.

Rated: 4/5 buttons .“I love the story and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s writing.”

It’s about Mikey, he’s just trying to graduate before his high school gets blown up. There are some weird shenanigans going on, and last time weird shenanigans were going on, the high school was blown up, and he wants none of that. There’s a really interesting contrast. The thing that I really like about it, is he still stresses himself out over petty high school nothings. While there’s a real possibility of an explosion that will kill everyone, a car crash and all this mad stuff that happens and he’s still like “but what about the Prom?!” He stresses himself out about that, it’s crazy. There are these little kids called The Indie Kids that keep on fighting and dying, but no one cares. Everyone is like “you hear about that Indie kid that died?” they do not have any regard for their existence whatsoever. Pretty much the plot is Mikey trying to live his life; graduate and get the girl, but all of this mad stuff is going on, like thousands of deer rushing him and beaming lights in the forest.

Rated: 4/5 dead Indie kids. “It’s a good book, I enjoyed it. Ness is one of my favourite writers of all time”

The whole book is based off of a study that argues that fear can be passed down in your genes through generations. Like if your mum is scared of something, most likely you will be too. In the book the mum of the main character, Kelsey was kidnapped when she was the age Kelsey is now. She came back a year later, pregnant. One day Kelsey freaks out and accidentally drives off a bridge. After being rescued, she sneaks out to attend the ceremony where her rescuer will be awarded a medal for bravery. When she comes home her mum is missing again. Her mum was so scared that she was always house bound, with all the windows and doors dead locked. There are signs of a struggle and there are two guys outside the house trying to get in. This scene stretches out to about half of the book, and that’s all that I’ve read so far…

Rated: 2.5/5 fears. “It’s pretty good, but it’s not Hysteria good”

Shade, The Changing Girl, Volume 1, written by Cecil Castellucci, drawn by Marley Zarcone, Review by Isabella

Really, really cool. Basically the plot is Loma Shade, who comes from another planet, is getting bored with her life and is inspired by this poet. She steals his madness coat from a museum, and then she transmits herself into the comatose body of a girl on Earth. The girl she has possessed is Megan. Everyone hates Megan. It’s really weird because Loma is a completely different person, but no one notices, they just think she sustained some brain damage. There are times when she says things like “I’m not used to this body” and no one picks up on it, which is a bit weird. There are multiple plots, like the people in her home planet who are rushing to get the coat back before Loma goes mad, while she’s just making friends and living the American high school dream. There’s also her comatose body lying about in a basement back on her home planet…

Rated: 5/5 madness coats. “The art is soo pretty, really colourful, stuff going on everywhere”

Arthur Dent gets out of bed one morning, and finds that people are trying to demolish his house. He goes to visit his friend Ford Prefect. He goes back to his house that’s being demolished and then boom, Vogons, these ugly slug people, want to build a hyper-space bypass through earth. They hitch a ride on the Vogon’s ship, and the Vogons read poetry to them, but it’s really bad. They nearly die and then they get taken to the airlock by this one guard and he keeps yelling about how useless they are and they try and convince him not to throw them out. They get rescued by a ship called The Heart of Gold and they know everyone on board by pure coincidence, like the president of the ships and this girl Arthur met at a party. He kinda doesn’t tell her that Earth got blown up. Then they go to this planet Magrathea where there are these missiles…

A lot happens, including but not limited to: police shootings, a botched brain transplant, a computer suicide and a restaurant at the end of the universe. Arthur never knows what’s going on, and there’s a running joke that he’s always in his dressing gown because that’s what he left in. He also can’t get a cup of tea anywhere.

Rated: 5/5 paranoid androids.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo, Review by Olivia

It’s about this girl who has a toy rabbit. She has all of these really nice outfits for it and when she goes out she places him by the window so he can watch her return. She goes on a boat trip with her family and when some boys take Edward and start throwing him about on board, he ends up in the ocean. He is found by a fisherman first and then he moves from person to person as he is lost and misplaced until he finds his way back home.

Rated: 4.5/5 china rabbits. “I’ve read this book multiple times, I always go back to it”

They Both Die in the End by Adam Silvera, Review by Wei Li

The concept of this world is that you get a call just before midnight saying that today is the day you will die. So you get to know in advance, so do what ever you want today, nothing is going to matter because you'll be dead soon. Your death is inevitable. So they call you within 24 hours of your death. So two boys, Mateo and Rufus get the phone call. The story is told from their perspectives and bunch of other characters who interact with them. One of them is a delinquent who was beating up a guy before the call. He doesn't tell anyone, especially not the guy he was beating up on. The other one is a gentle person. He has a friend who has just had a baby. They're all seventeen, eighteen years-old. They're polar opposites of each other. There's a site where people who are about to die go on to get comfort. There are some really weird perverts on there, but they end up contacting each other and spend their last day together. Neither of them want to see their family and friends sad because it's their death day, so they don't tell anyone. So the story is about their last day, avoiding the guy who was beaten on and falling in love. It's very sweet and sad.

Rated: 5/5 car crashes. "It put me through a bunch of emotions. It sort of gives you this lost feeling every now and then. It's really heart breaking. It's fabulous, I cried, I loved it"

A Waltz for Matilda: The Matilda Saga, Book 1 by Jackie French, Review by Erin

The story is based on the song. There's a girl called Matilda who goes off to find her father, a swagman. It's really good because it completely changes your perspective on what the song is about. It's very complicated because the way the author writes makes it not sound as sad, depressing or disgusting, but when you think about it later, you realize it's really messed up and awful. The ending could have been more satisfying.

Rated: 4/5 swagmen."This is the first book of the saga. It's really cool because of the historical setting."
